Background
Stephen Slice is a senior lecturer with the Department of Economics in the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina.
Stephen worked 32 years with the United States Department of Agriculture in the Farmers Home Administration/Farm Service Agency as a Farm Loan Specialist applying economic principles in lending money to farmers all across South Carolina. Upon retiring from the USDA, he accepted a full-time appointment as a lecturer with Department of Economics. He teaches Essentials of Economics, Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, and Engineering Economics.
Stephen also teaches two courses every spring as an adjunct professor for Buena Vista University (Storm Lake, Iowa) for their online Agribusiness BS degree program – Economics of Agricultural Markets and Applied Agricultural Financial Management.
Stephen serves or has served on several agricultural advisory boards, councils and collaborative committees — Clemson’s State Extension Advisory Council, the South Carolina New and Beginning Farmer Program Advisory Council, South Carolina Food Policy Council, and the Midlands Local Food Collaborative. After serving two terms as the president of the South Carolina Agricultural Council, he has continued his service to the council as its secretary/treasurer since 2004. Part of his continued service with the South Carolina Agricultural Council is to help plan and lead two agricultural tours every year (spring and fall). He has also given presentations on Financing Agricultural Operations for Clemson Extension’s South Carolina New and Beginning Farmer Program (SCNBFP).
Stephen is married to Deborah Slice. Together, they have three sons — David, a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology; Benjamin, a graduate of Clemson University; and John, a graduate of the University of South Carolina.
Stephen plays the dobro in a bluegrass band (Saluda River Band), enjoys barbecuing/smoking meats, playing chess against his computer, and watching Star Trek and Star Wars related shows.
