Center for Clean Water and Healthy Ecosystems

Led by biology professor Tammi Richardson, this interdisciplinary center focuses on researching the scientific and socioeconomic aspects of water quality. The center's mission is to address current and emerging challenges to sustaining clean water sources for consumption and recreational use. Key research areas include:​

  • Investigating the effects of contaminants on aquatic ecosystem health
  • Developing new technologies for efficient water sample collection and analysis
  • Creating visual and analytical tools to identify sources of water contaminants
  • Studying public perceptions of water quality and their influence on behavior​

The center collaborates with strategic partners, such as the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, to enhance water quality monitoring and provide comprehensive analyses of water samples across the state.​

Tourism Crisis Management Institute (TCMI)

Established in 2007, TCMI is a globally recognized leader in tourism crisis planning and response. Under the leadership of Dr. Lori Pennington-Gray, TCMI develops research-driven solutions that address the four phases of crisis management: reduction, readiness, response, and recovery.

  • Domestic Travel Anxiety Index (DTAI): A monthly barometer measuring U.S. travelers' anxiety levels related to domestic travel, providing insights into traveler sentiments during crises.
  • Tourism Crisis Management Plan (TCMP) Workshops: Interactive sessions offering best practices and tools for destinations and organizations to develop comprehensive crisis management plans.
  • Customized Consulting and Training: Tailored programs assisting tourism organizations in developing crisis communication strategies, visitor assistance programs, and area response networks.
