Background

James Johnson joined the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management in fall 2024 as its business and grants manager. A US Army veteran, he brought more than 25 years of diverse business and financial experience, including budget management and grants oversight to the College of HRSM.

In his current position, he works closely with HRSM's Chief Financial Officer to monitor, approve and provide oversight and financial management for college funds. Additionally, he assists faculty with pre-award grant budget preparation and proposal submission.

Johnson has been with the University of South Carolina since 2018 and worked in the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the College of Education before moving to HRSM.

Johnson is a USC Spartanburg graduate with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice. He then went on to earn his MBA from USC Aiken.

Johnson lives in Irmo, South Carolina, with his wife, Tiffany, and their son, Kaiden. He enjoys reading for leisure, most types of music, miniature model painting, and all things Star Wars and Disney.
