The University of South Carolina’s First-Generation Symposium is an annual celebration
of the experiences, successes, and unique needs of first-generation college students.
Hosted by the Center for Teaching Excellence, this collaborative event is supported
by the Graduation and Retention Network (GARNET), the First-Generation Center, the Office of Access and Opportunity, TRIO,
University Libraries, and Horseshoe Catering. Join us for an inspiring day filled with engaging discussions,
insightful data, and impactful stories.

Keynote Presentation
Kick off the symposium with Dr. Kem Saichaie, an expert in educational equity and inclusion from the University of California, Davis. Dr. Saichaie will explore strategies for creating a supportive environment that empowers first-generation college students to thrive academically and personally. This keynote is relevant to all educators at USC, including faculty, staff, and administrators.
Dr. Saichaie is the co-editor of the Journal for First-Generation Student Success. He was elected to the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Core Committee (2021-2024) and currently serves as the co-chair of the Membership Committee. At the system-level, he contributes to the UC First-Generation Coalition and was the Chair of the UC Center for Teaching and Learning Consortium from 2022-2023. Dr. Saichaie has published in a number of venues such as The Journal of Higher Education; Journal of Excellence in College Teaching; and International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. He collaborates on a number grant-related initiatives, including serving as a co-principal investigator on a National Science Foundation Improving Undergraduate STEM Education project: Transforming Institutions Through STEM Equity Learning Communities.
