The University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy welcomed 103 new students to the Class of 2029 at its annual White Coat Ceremony held at the Koger Center on August 15.
Of the incoming class, 42 students were accepted through the Gamecock Pharmacy Assurance pathway by meeting certain requirements during their first two years of undergraduate studies. The current average GPA for the incoming class is 3.75, with 68 of the 103 hailing from South Carolina. Out-of-state students represent 13 states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
Dean Stephen J. Cutler emphasized the significance of the ceremony and the profession the new students are entering.
“Today, we're commemorating several things: a professional rite of passage, a commitment by you to uphold the standards required to be an active participant in one of the nation's most trusted professions, and the commitment by our college and the faculty to help you, the students, develop as professionals," Cutler says. "The white coat symbolizes trust, professionalism, honesty and integrity.”

Guest speaker Kayce Shealy, a 2009 graduate and 2025 Outstanding Young Alumna who serves as the board executive of the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy, encouraged students to view challenges as learning opportunities.
"Speed bumps are intended to slow you down, not stop you," Shealy says. "You have fantastic faculty and staff. I know because I have worked with many of them. You have some of the best in the country. Take advantage of that."
Student Government Association President Lauren Agnew reminded her fellow students about the importance of perseverance and attitude.
"Pharmacy school will challenge you and change you,” she notes, “but you have already shown the will, so trust the process.”
