Matthew Edwards is a senior journalism major and sport and entertainment management minor from Dillon, South Carolina.

He is in the 12-hour senior semester capstone course and is a writer and editor for the Carolina News and Reporter. Read some of his articles»

Edwards chose his major because he has loved writing and telling stories for as long as he can remember.

“I enjoy our journalism program because we are one big family,” he says.

Not only has he made lifelong friends with his classmates, but he’s also enjoyed having supportive professors.

“Their doors are always open, and they want to see me succeed far beyond my goals,” he says. “Our class sizes are small starting junior year, so that gives the opportunity for more roundtable discussion and closer relationships with everyone in the class.”

Edwards is simultaneously enrolled in the Accelerated Master of Mass Communication program for strategic communication management. Twelve undergraduate credit hours count toward his graduate degree, which  means he will graduate in five years with two degrees. And he will have saved a lot of money!

“I am extremely excited for how affordable my remaining 24 hours of credits are, and I cannot wait to eventually become a two-time Carolina alumnus,” he says.

He’s confident having a degree in strategic communication management upon graduation will better his chances of landing his first job and pave the way for him to become a communications director in the next 10 years.

Edwards has made the President's List every semester of his college career and has worked as a writer, copy editor and sports editor at The Daily Gamecock.
