    Looking to engage in research outside of the academic year? There are a wide range of summer research programs available for undergraduate students. Included below is a listing of local and national opportunities. Continuing in research over the summer is a valuable way to further build into your skillset, develop professionally, and increase competitiveness for your future career.     Designed to enhance the career growth and development of undergraduate students from the College of Engineering and Computing thorugh hands-on experiential learning, innovation, and research.

    Open to undergraduate students enrolled at a university/college in South Carolina that will graduate after May 2026. Training will foster interests and competencies in Big Data Analytics in infectious disease research.

    Students will join the research program of a faculty mentor, working alongside graduate students and postdocs and interacting regularly with the mentor on questions related to frontiers of physics and astronomy.  Summer 2026 application information coming soon!

    10-week, summer research at MUSC in biomedical and biobehavioral cancer research with an emphasis on cancer disparity dynamics in South Carolina.

    Making Waves: Science Communication and Interdisciplinary Ocean Research Experiences at USF, College of Marine Science

    This project will create an immersive ocean science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) for 30 students, 10 per year (3 years), with different academic backgrounds (both STEM & non-STEM; rising sophomores, juniors, & seniors). It will expose, train, and educate students in the discipline of oceanographic research and science communication.

    Building Pathways to Community Disaster Resilience

    This research experience for undergraduates (REU) program aims to safeguard human and physical infrastructure against disasters. We use methods that center community needs and value local knowledge.

    To support the development of an engaged and qualified workforce in the semiconductor industry, the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, Materials for Future Computing, will provide an enriching ten-week summer research program, from May 26 - July 31, 2026, in the Materials Science and Engineering department (MSE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

    Digital Twins of Road Infrastructure  NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)  at West Virginia University and University of Wisconsin-Madison. This 10-week summer program offers students hands-on research experience in cutting-edge topics such as infrastructure digital twins, digital construction, and sustainable transportation systems. Participants will collaborate with faculty mentors, visit real infrastructure sites, and gain invaluable professional development training for graduate study and STEM careers.

    SPUR is a nationally competitive opportunity that provides undergraduate students with an intensive 10-week summer research experience under the mentorship of a University of Utah faculty member. The program provides opportunities to gain research experience in a variety of disciplines.
