Supervised Learning Experiences

Supervised learning experiences (SLE), whether for credit or non-credit, are comprised primarily of the practical application of previously studied theories and skills, under the oversight of a supervisor, mentor, or other qualified professional who has a direct or indirect reporting responsibility to the university. Supervised learning experiences are part of a program of study, and examples may include practica, student teaching, clinical placements, field experiences, or internships. 

Students engaged in supervised learning experiences (internships, practica, clinicals, and fieldwork) in other states should email their college program contact for more information about supervised learning experiences or to verify professional licensure/certification outcomes within a program which triggers this requirement.

Not all Supervised Learning Experiences (SLE) are approved Experiential Learning Opportunities (ELO) through USC Connect. For more information visit the Choose your Experiences page. 

State boards of professional licensure and certification may limit distributed learning (online coursework) and/or experiential learning activities in some states for programs leading to professional licensure. Information for each program leading to professional licensure is found in the Professional Licensure Outcomes statement. Students should contact the appropriate state licensing board for detailed rules regarding distributed learning (online coursework) or experiential learning in the state prior to enrolling or engaging in online or on-the-ground coursework outside of South Carolina.
