Carolina Alert: Due to anticipated inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Debby, the Columbia campus will remain open on Thursday, Aug. 8 for essential personnel only. As a state agency, USC campus closure decisions are based on those of Richland County government offices, which will be closed to the public tomorrow. Employees should check-in with their supervisors and employees with telework agreements are required to work from home unless the weather event prevents your ability to work due to childcare, power outages etc. Please exercise caution if you must travel during the storm, which is expected to bring additional rainfall and wind gusts to the Midlands beginning this evening. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move to higher ground. Monitor Carolina Alert at sc.edu/CarolinaAlert for flash flood warnings that may impact campus. Areas that are especially prone to flooding include the intersection of Main and Whaley streets, the parking lots behind 300 Main Street, the parking lots behind the Blatt P.E. Center, Sumter Street under the railroad bridge, Pickens Street under the pedestrian crossing, and Five Points. The safety of our campus community is a primary concern of the university, so please monitor sc.edu/weather, USC's social media at X.com/uofsc and the Carolina Alert website at sc.edu/CarolinaAlert for updates.

In consultation with state and county emergency officials, the University of South Carolina is tracking Tropical Storm Debby. Significant rainfall is expected to impact the Midlands region beginning tonight through Friday. In the event of a flash flood, move to higher ground. Monitor Carolina Alert at sc.edu/carolinaalert for flash flood warnings that may impact campus. Areas that are especially prone to flooding include the intersection of Main and Whaley streets, the parking lots behind 300 Main St., the parking lots behind the Blatt P.E. Center, Sumter Street under the railroad bridge, Pickens Street under the pedestrian crossing, and Five Points. Also be aware that in preparation for heavy rainfall, USC work crews are placing sandbags in areas around campus most prone to flooding. Please do not attempt to access building entrances that have been closed and follow all posted notices. As a state agency, any potential closures are based on decisions by Richland County government offices.
