Beginning Spanish II

In this course you will continue to expand your abilities to communicate in Spanish; that is, to speak, understand, read, and write Spanish. You will use Spanish to learn more about the countries and communities where Spanish is spoken and to access information about agriculture, history, geography, art, music, and other academic disciplines. You will study the building blocks of Spanish; the words, grammatical structures, and pronunciation of the language. Then you will apply your new skills as you speak, read, write, and listen to Spanish.  You'll also learn about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, since that information will help you interact more effectively with speakers of Spanish. This course counts toward the Global Citizenship and Multicultural Understanding: Foreign Language (GFL) requirement for the Carolina Core. This course is restricted to those who have completed SPAN 109 and is a prerequisite for SPAN 122.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Communicate

• Demonstrate understanding of and interpret the main ideas and some supporting details of written and spoken communication in the present and past tenses on topics of personal interest such as daily routine, food, clothing, and asking for and giving directions
• Produce oral and written exchanges with the ability to initiate and sustain simple interchanges including providing and obtaining information, expressing feelings and preferences, and exchanging ideas and opinions on topics of personal interest such those mentioned above 

Understand the culture

• Demonstrate understanding of cultural information and relationships between cultural perspectives, products, and practices
• Use appropriate cultural behavior in some common social situations 

Connect

• Use the Spanish language to reinforce subject matter and learn new information in other academic areas 

Compare

• Explain insights into their own language and culture, as developed through readings and video activities 

Engage with the community

• Identify opportunities to practice and hear Spanish in the community in activities such as concerts, movies, lectures, exhibits, festivals, and conversational exchanges with Hispanics in the community
