First-Gen Mentor Program

Our First-Gen Mentor Program connects first-gen students living at Maxcy College with faculty, staff, and students who are living, working, and studying at USC! Mentoring benefits both the mentor and mentee, through shared experiences and the journey of navigating college life together. 

I am a Maxcy First-Gen LLC resident. How do I connect with a mentor?

Maxcy First-Gen LLC residents will be assigned a mentor. You will be emailed your mentor's contact info mid-September, along with other program details.

How does working with a mentor benefit me?        

Benefits of the mentoring program include:  

  • Exploring opportunities on campus and within the community
  • Connecting with a group of First-Gen allies
  • Engaging in fun social activities
  • Joining one-on-one and group mentoring opportunities

Who can sign up to be a mentor?

A first-gen mentor must be one of the following:

  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Graduate student
  • Upper class student

You'll be part of a Cocky Crew!

A Cocky Crew provides support to the mentor and mentee through one-on-one meetings and small group activities. A Cocky Crew will typically include:

  • 1 faculty member 
  • 1 staff member
  • 1 graduate student 
  • 1-3 upper class students
  • 4-6 mentees

Cocky Crew Lead

If you are a mentor who is a natural-born event coordinator and planner - you may enjoy the role of the Cocky Crew Lead! In addition to planning group activities, the lead will collect and share mentor feedback monthly to the First-Gen Center.
