Special Topics in Popular Music

This course will explore the development of rock (and popular music) through the lens of four key themes: social, political, and cultural issues; issues of race, class, and gender; the development of the music industry; and the development of technology.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss the origins of rock and roll and the development throughout the decades
  2. Define and recognize basic music elements
  3. Recognize various genres in rock (and popular) music from the 1920s to the present
  4. Develop critical thinking to make educated decisions on what you do/do not like about music
