Organization
The Initiative is led by a director appointed by the dean of the School of Law.
The Initiative has an advisory Council consisting of 12-20 South Carolina lawyers representing a broad range of perspectives, practice areas, and experiences. The imprimatur of the Initiative can be placed upon an action or Report only with the approval of the Council. Council members are appointed by the Director with the advice of the Dean.
Upon approval by the Council, the Director may appoint one or more lawyers to serve as the Reporter(s) on a project of the Initiative. Reporters normally are appointed to research and prepare a detailed report on the impact of a proposed law upon existing South Carolina law and to recommend changes as may be appropriate to address specific South Carolina needs or issues.
The Director may appoint one or more persons (usually lawyers) as Assistant Reporter(s) to assist the Reporter(s) on a project of the Initiative.
With the approval of the Dean, the Director may appoint an active or retired lawyer to assist the Director in the management of Initiative projects and to advise Reporters as necessary or appropriate to ensure that the work of the initiative is of a consistently high quality and is produced in a timely manner. The Project Advisor will work closely with Reporters, especially at the outset of a project to orient the Reporter(s) to the expectations of the role and again at the conclusion of a project to ensure that the report or other product is ready for Council consideration.
Other persons may be appointed from time to time by the Director or by the Dean after consultation with the Director, to assist in the work of the Initiative.
